We were sorry to hear of Mikes passing. May your memories of Mike bring you comfort.

Mike was a wonderful coach to our son through his years at IFly. His passion for coaching the youngsters in swimming was amazing. Our prayers and condolences are with Mike and his family.

Mike was one of my favorite ICPD officers of all time - and there are (and have been) a lot of good ones. He was the best PIO and someone reporters loved to chat with, not just because sometimes he’d tell us a little more information than he probably should have! Mike was friendly, funny, patient and kind. I’m so sorry, Denise, and family!

Dear Denise, Natalie, & Kirk, We are so saddened and heartfelt for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time.

Doug, Diane & family ... We are so very sorry for your loss! Mike was a special guy who came from a special family. May you be comforted by your faith & by Mike's spirit as he watches over you. We send our love.

Dear Denise, Natalie, Kirk and the Brotherton family…I’am truly sorry for your loss. May your happy memories give you peace and comfort during this challenging time.

So saddened and shocked to see Mike’s obit today. I met Mike in the 70s via Dave Farnsworth when they were both Iowa City police officers. Mike was the sweetest man and kind beyond measure. Effing cancer. I hope his passing was peaceful and sending my deepest condolences to his families. Much love, peace and healing to you all.

Though I did not know Mike; I have family that did and loved him so. My son in law Doug Colin, Marie, and John Colin all have so many good things to say about Mike. And my other daughter Monica was the Brotherton paper carrier on Hickory Hill. Her sig. other Chad Andrews says so much about Mike. And I’d like to extend my sympathy to Diane( we worked together as school nurses. Sympathy to the whole family, blessings RoseAnn Derks

Mike was one of the good ones. I had the honor of teaching him to dive years ago. He called me a few months ago and wanted to go have a beer and catch up on old times. Mike was a great guy and he will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

Very sorry for your loss. I was a reporter at the Daily Iowan back in the early 2000s, when Mike was the public information officer. He was one of the most helpful, patient and generous sources I ever worked with. A true public servant, and overall just a great guy. And I didn't know he was a pilot! My condolences.

Mike was such a wonderful person. My mother bernice had breakfast at ecumenical towers every month for police and fire men. Always enjoyed the stories and company. Rest in peace Mike. You will always be loved by so many people.

Denise and family. I believe your son graduated with my son Joshua. Sorry to hear the news about Mike. Sending you peace in the midst of this difficulty.

Denise and family. Sorry to hear of Mike ‘s passing. He was a great person neighbor. I knew Mike from North Liberty where I sold Mike the land on which he had his tree farm and built his home. I know he loved planning and grooming his Christmas trees for sale. Robert Greenwald

Devastating news, and loss. Extending my heartfelt sympathies to Mikes family, and loved ones. We met Mike in the late 70’s. I remember getting to take turns to do ride alongs when Mike was a police officer with the ICPD. He, and other officers used to frequent our families restaurant and that’s where we first got to know Mike. Such a stand up guy, and he was taken to soon. Wishing his family peace and comfort now, and in going forward. God bless- Krista

Denise and Family, as a young attorney for the County Mike was instrumental in helping me get my footing. Later, I was lucky enough to go on a motor cycle ride or two with him. Mike had a soul that was all smile. He had words that were always kind. He had a life that was always in motion. The world is brighter for what he brought to it. <3
