Robert Singer, 94, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at NHC HealthCare in North Augusta. S.C. A visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, with a private burial to 

follow.

Robert was born Nov. 18, 1919, to Martin and Emma (Schmatt) Singer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended Cedar Rapids schools, where he last attended Wilson High School. Robert enlisted in the United States Army during World War II. He was last stationed in Washington, D.C., where he was very active in the main Army band playing all types of saxophones and performing at various national functions. He was also part of a select Army dance band and was proud to have performed in the White House, where he met various senators and representatives and President and Mrs. Truman. Robert also was very active in many local dance bands in the Cedar Rapids area for nearly 70 years.

Robert married Virginia Reel on Feb. 14, 1944, in Washington, D.C. Robert and Virginia made there home in Cedar Rapids, where they lived for most of their lives. While in Cedar Rapids, Robert was also a very active bowler and softball player. He also enjoyed playing golf with friends and doing his yard work.

Robert worked for Penick & Ford for over 30 years until his retirement. After retirement he worked for the Cedar Rapids School District as a janitor for 10 years.

Robert is survived by his son, Richard (Janet) Singer; two grandchildren Jennifer (Chris) Mead and Jay (Yuchien) Singer; and four great-grandchildren, Jessica and Ashleigh Mead and Arielle and Nathaniel Singer.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia Singer; and brother, Ernest.
