Barbara Ann (Koerschner) Wichgers, of Cedar Rapids, IA, formerly of Random Lake, WI, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, at the age of 97. Barbara was born in Cudahy, WI on August 26, 1928, the fourth oldest of eight children born to Edward and Hildegarde (Freudenberg) Koerschner. She married her beloved husband Jerome Howard Wichgers on July 30, 1955, in South Milwaukee, WI. Together they built a life and a family in which they were blessed with three sons. Barbara earned Bachelor and Master of Education degrees and was a dedicated teacher for 33 years, beginning her career teaching 30–40 students in a one-room schoolhouse. She was so loved by her students that several stayed in touch with her. Barbara remained a lifelong learner and placed great value in contributing to her community. She volunteered at the Lakeview Community Library, Random Lake Area Historical Society, and was a devoted member of the Parish of our Lady of the Lakes in Random Lake. In 2022, Barbara moved to Grand Living in Cedar Rapids, IA, to be closer to family where she lived independently. Barbara maintained a close, personal, and loving connection with many friends and family. Barbara is survived by her sons, Bill (Barbara Bowen) of Bainbridge Island, WA, Tom (Maria) of Harker Heights, TX, and Joel (Kim) of Urbana, IA. Barbara is also survived by her grandchildren Nicole Wichgers, Pamela (Alan) Osterhout, Christopher, John Carlos, and Javier Wichgers; and her great granddaughter, Tova Osterhout. She is survived by her brothers, Frederick (Fran) Koerschner, William (Phyllis) Kerschner, two sisters-in-law Mary Ann and Jeanette, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; devoted husband Jerome in 2021; sisters Rosemary Higgins, Loretta Plevak, and Ann Grede; and her brothers Edward and John.

Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 am on Friday, May 15, 2026, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am officiated by Rev. John Seda, followed by a luncheon in the church hall.

The family would like to especially thank the staff and residents of Grand Living for all their love, care, and support.
