Terrence “Terry” James Murray of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was called home Saturday, June 20, 2026.  He was surrounded by his loving family at the UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital Emergency Department.  A Memorial Service for family and close friends will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel of Memories located at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, 4200 First Avenue NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with inurnment immediately following at the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum Corridor of Hope 2nd Addition.

Terry is survived by the love of his life and best friend, Patrice, whom he married almost 37 years ago; his daughter Brittany (Patrick) Gibbs of Cedar Rapids; his son Patterson Murray of Cedar Rapids; his grandson Henry “Hank” Gibbs; and his granddaughter Scottie June Gibbs.  He also leaves behind his sister Patricia (David) Airy; his sister Kathy (Scott) Anderson; his brother Michael (Beth) Murray; eight nieces and nephews; many grandnephews and grandnieces; and his crazy but much-loved and faithful dog, Rocky.  Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew “Jim” and Mary Jo Murray, and his sister Deborah Landowski.

Terry was born and raised in the Cedar Rapids/Marion area, attending Saint Joseph’s Elementary School and Regis High School, where he enjoyed football, basketball, wrestling, and band.  After graduation, he found his passion for computers and built his career in the information technology field.

There was nothing more important to Terry than his family.  He adored them deeply.  He enjoyed their family vacations, camping, firepits, the Chicago Cubs and Dallas Cowboys, and listening to his wife sing.  He also couldn’t resist cake donuts and kettle corn, Sunkist Zero Sugar Orange Soda, and Captain Morgan Spiced Rum with Diet Coke.

Terry will be remembered most for making people laugh.  He liked to play jokes on family and friends, and he was always one to have a quick and funny response to anything that happened.  Terry’s favorite way to pass the time, though, was just being together with family – visiting, laughing, and watching his grandchildren.

In April of 2019 Terry received a kidney transplant after four years of dialysis.  Because of that transplant, he was able to walk his daughter down the aisle and buy his son his first drink.  He had the chance to hold, love, and laugh with his grandchildren, who filled him with unbelievable joy.  And he was able to dance with his wife one last time last fall.

Terry leaves behind a legacy of laughter and strength that we hope will live on in each of us.  He is tremendously missed and will be forever remembered.

In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to honor Terry’s memory with signing up to be an organ donor or making a donation to the American Diabetes Association.
