We knew Max from being in the graduating class of 1956 at Wilson High School. Our memories of him are very positive. He seemed to be driven by purpose and was not one to waste time without there being a plan. He was not the most outgoing student but was a solid friend you knew you could depend on. We moved from Cedar Rapids in 1965 and currently live in Plymouth, Minnesota. However, the memory of Max is still a positive one. He was a treasured high school friend. He always seemed happy to attend our high school class reunions. We remember his smiling face as he shared with us at these events. We feel blessed to have had him as a friend and classmate

Words cannot express our sadness at Max's passing. Max, Carol and the kids were some of our family's very best friends. We have years of fond memories of Max, Carol, Debbie, Danny and Denny. We both worked at my dad's (Bernie Beranek) Coast to Coast Store in Czech Village, where Max was the manager. We boated, snowmobiled and camped with the Maucks. Max and Gordon Elliff saved my dad's life when they were clearing snowmobile trails, and a tree fell on my dad's head, causing a near fatal injury to his brain. Before the convenience of cellphones, these two men threw the back seat out of the jeep, then lifted dad into it. One of them rushed dad to the hospital, and the other ran to get my mom. We will be forever grateful for these two men's quick thinking. All three of these buddies are now in heaven, once again enjoying their friendship. Carol, Debbie, Danny, Denny and families, our hearts hurt FOR you and WITH you. Please let us know when the memorial service will be. Love to you all.

Saddened to hear of Max's passing Such a dear friend and kind soul I will miss him. Condolences to Carol, Denny,Danny & Debbie. R.i.P

Talk about the day I met him. We used to eat donuts at the shop, which would’ve been Hawkeye marine. Sure miss those days and I would love to sell him a new six horse Johnson on the other hand. I did try to sell him a 25 Johnson, but he wouldn’t want to buy it Sure gonna miss this guy but at least he’s at peace no pain only thing
