Lewis A. Thurston, 75, of Magnolia, TX passed away on February 16, 2022. Graveside Service: 10:00 AM, Friday, June 17, 2022, at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Lewis was born on July 30, 1946, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He was the son of Charles A. Jr. and Velma A. (Walker) Thurston. Lewis joined the U.S. Navy on his 17th birthday, July 30, 1963. He was sworn in at Des Moines, IA and went to boot camp at the Naval Training Station in San Diego, CA. Lewis’ first tour of duty was aboard the USS Coral Sea. The Coral Sea’s home port was San Francisco, CA. After he was assigned to the Coral Sea, he was flown by mail plane and landed aboard the aircraft carrier, due to the fact that it was back in San Francisco. He served in the South China Sea for 331 days from October 1964 to September 1965. Lewis continued to serve in the U. S. Navy until his honorable discharge in March of 1968.
Lewis enjoyed woodworking and owned a cabinet shop. He also owned a racetrack. His hobbies were fishing and hunting. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his son Brandon Thurston of Magnolia, TX, grandson Max Lee Thurston, brother Charles Thurston, and sisters Karen Peterson and Marguerite Roberts.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
