Pastor Kay was a God-sent person who, upon first meeting, one connected ... spiritually and in deep friendship. Those who were blessed to know her, like I, give thanks for her having been with us. We know that her joy of life in the Lord will continue to walk with us as we, too, make our way Home. I am saddened at her passing. I share Jerry's grief, and I know that we will meet again someday "up there".

One of Rev. Slocum-Dillon's melodies & words from her musical opus whose name I don't recall (from circa 1974), has popped into my brain today: "In the Beginning, there was the Word". We were rehearsing it as she was creating it but did not have the chance to perform it before she moved away. I hope she was able to finish the work and have another teen group perform it but it is alive in my mind today almost 50 years later thanks to her prodigious talents. Fondly certain she has brought more music to Heaven.

As Mrs. Slocum and our Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Falls Church VA youth music director (and our neighbor around the corner in Mantua, Fairfax, Virginia), she picked up my sister and I for weekly rehearsals and early Sunday services with daughters Kerrie & Julie from 1972 until maybe 1974/75(?). Her example and encouragement and faith in us to learn, grow & share faith through music had us putting on Godspell the musical, learning to play handbells and taking another teen folk rock group, "Get Together", to nursing homes & other venues here inside the Washington DC beltway. We were rehearsing one of her own musical works when her family was called to move away, but her loving faith and joy has stayed with us, and she and her family are in our prayers. We celebrate her life and are grateful we had so much time together to witness her many gifts. I never find her character dancing around the golden calf when the "Ten Commandments" plays but will always remember her love of life and of the Lord. Love from the Charlie & Lis Shelton family (Mary Ann, Chris & Paul)

The name "Pastor Kay" was so well known in Cedar Rapids that no last name was needed. She was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed. Rest in peace.

Paul, We were both so saddened to read Kay's obituary. But at the same time it was so inspirational. The Lord gave Kay so many gifts, and she used them for others and to His glory. Whenever Kay came into the store even for an ordinary errand like mailing a package, she lit up the store with her smile and disposition. We had known you for years before you and Kay were together. I remember when you first told us you were being married, you had glow about you. It was obvious how much you loved her. Heaven is brighter with her there. Every time I see figurine, ornament or card of an angel with a violin, I will think or her. Peace to you and the rest of the family. Chris and Lee Fredrickson (Pak Mail)

My sincerest condolences to Paul and Pastor Kay's entire family. My husband, Michael, and I were some of the 'non-members' at First Lutheran Church that Pastor Kay served. Michael had brain cancer and she supported us throughout his 18 months in hospice from 2013-2015. She gave Michael so much peace and officiated his services for us after his passing. Pastor Kay was one of a kind and gave us all so much hope and inspiration and was one of the most faithful persons I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. One of my fondest memories is when she came to our home in Michael's final days and played her violin for us. She told him what an inspiration he was to others, and I always thought...she knew that...because she was so inspirational to others. Her work on earth is complete, rest in peace, Pastor Kay. God Bless.

Dear family of Pastor Kay, you can rest assured that she was welcomed into Heaven by Jesus himself, calling her "The Mother Teresa of Iowa". She was that and more. God bless her soul.

I served with Pastor Kay on the Stephen Ministry Program for a number of years. Occasionally she would be a bit late for our meetings, she was seemingly always involved with helping someone in one type of crisis or another. She had the true heart of a servant, an inspiration to all with whom she came in contact. Her empathetic conducting of my late father's funeral service was beyond expectations for someone she had never met. She was a jewel of a person, sincere sympathies to the family.

Pastor Kay was an inspiration. She had the ability to see good in everyone and helped many find it in themselves. She loved life and she loved God, and served him well. God rest her soul. God's comfort and peace to all her family.

I had the honor and pleasure of serving on staff with Pastor Kay at FLC. She was such a beautiful soul and I love how this obituary is so beautifully written and captures Kay so well. My prayers are with you all. Praise God for the gift of eternal life!
