Roland L. Hiemstra, 86, of Cedar Rapids passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha, surrounded by his loving family.  A visitation will be held on Friday, May 19 from 4 PM to 7 PM at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.  Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1 PM at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories with Certified Celebrant Julie Freese.  Burial with military rites will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Roland Lavern Hiemstra was born on June 23, 1930 to Henry and Hazel Russell Hiemstra in Mahaska County, Iowa.  Roland proudly served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict.   He was united in marriage to Patty Lou De Selm on June 14, 1953 in Oskaloosa, Iowa.  He owned and operated, with his son, a farm for many years.  Roland enjoyed collecting rocks and buckeyes. Roland gave buckeyes to everyone he met because he told them they would bring good luck.  He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Patty Lou; children, Renee Hiemstra (Mike Murdock) and Rocky (Julie) Hiemstra both of Cedar Rapids; sister, Darlene Strasser of Oskaloosa; 10 grandchildren, Blaine, Dallas, and Leah Hiemstra, Ashley, Blake, and Cole Murdock, Nichole Schappert, Ryan, Brad, and Tracy Hiemstra; and 5 great grandchildren, Kingston, Skyler, Grace Lynn, Wesley, and Declan.

Roland was preceded in death by his parents; son, Craig Hiemstra; daughter, Roxanne Schappert; siblings, Jasper, Clifford, Virginia, and Alveta.
