My sympathy upon the loss of Leo. I have lived in Connecticut for almost 30 years, but grew up in Eastern Iowa INSERT INTO guestbook VALUES (Mt. Vernon)in the 1960s and 70s. I grew up hearing Leo and his band on WMT, along with Howdy Roberts. I and my whole family listened almost entirely to WMT and were very familiar with Leo, his music and his warm personality. Though I did not meet him in person, Leo was one of those people who you felt you "knew" as a friend. It was good to hear again, what a lovely man Leo Greco was, a true gentleman and family man. I thank God for having known of him and being able to remember him warmly.

To Leo's Family: Helen and I were saddened to learn of Leo's death, not hearing of it until we returned to Cedar Rapids after the funeral. Our sincere sympathy to all of you. Leo was special to us since we met at a Leo Greco dance at Melody Mill in Dubuque. I'm sure Leo "sponsored" many other couples. He was an evangelist for caring, a great example for all of us. Thanks Leo and God bless his family.

I was very sad to hear of Uncle Leo's passing but comforted in knowing he is able to be with Aunt Louise again. I will always cherish the wonderful memories of him from playing at their house as a kid to him playing with his band at my 30th birthday party. He never forgot my birthday and always played me a song on his show ever since I was a little. Uncle Leo was a VERY special person, one I was honored to have walk me down the aisle on my wedding day and give me away. He meant that much to me that I didn't even ask my own Father to do the honor. He will be missed. Love to you all.Love, Stephanie and Savannah Howard,Amanda and Justin Musil, and Bobbie Bowman

My sympathies to all who knew Leo, especially his children. I was with my sisters and brother the weekend before Leo died and as we told stories about our childhood in CR. we talked about Leo and all the Greco's. All of us spent so much time at your house. In fact, we even went through your house remembering where everything was. Larry, I remember so well when Brenda Lee was going to be on your dad's show and she was at your house and signed a picture of herself for you. I was so impressed!! We talked about your basement with the school desks and your swing set and on and on. Interesting that we were having this conversation just a couple of days before he died. I am sure this is a sad time for all of you and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Leo Greco's music is part of the soundtrack of my life in Cedar Rapids. Even after I left the state, whenever I visited my mother in CR, we had to stop conversation when Leo was playing on the radio. Sometimes we would even polka around the kitchen for a song or two. Leo Greco will forever be a part of so many people's memory album. My condolences to the family - especially to my old high school friend, Larry. You have done your dad proud!

In the seven years I worked at WMT AM-FM I was privileged to know Leo Greco. I always said at the time that this had to be the most positive person I had ever met. I don't recall ever hearing a negative or discouraging remark from him for he had an attitude that escapes most of us. His many fans, friends and listeners were evidence of this. To Lance and the rest of your family, you have my sympathy and to Leo, congratulations on a life well lived!

Leo's special kindnesses to the Sisters of Mercy and my parents throughout their lives are memories cherished. Blessings ~~

To Leo's family,
I just wanted to let you know how special Leo was to our family, Our son Brandon was a Shriner's kid. We attended many years of Christmas parties and could always count on Leo being there playing and singing Christmas songs. We always said it wouldn't be a Shriners christmas party with out Leo's music. Our Son Brandon passed away in 2007. I hope they get a chance to meet again and sing a few carols together. We thank Leo so much for being such a kind hearted loving person.

A legend of giving, goodwill to mankind and love for his family, friends and music - all rolled into one - has passed. Leo Greco, a star in Eastern Iowa and well beyond, will be sorely missed. The renowned radio and TV shows Leo hosted carried across Iowa and beyond and brought pure and simple joy into thousands of households on a weekly basis.
Late last year, I was listening to a "Willie INSERT INTO guestbook VALUES (Nelson) and The Wheel INSERT INTO guestbook VALUES (Asleep at the Wheel)" CD when it came to a familiar, toe-tapping, swing instrumental called "South" that made me smile. It was a signature song for Leo, and I began to reminisce. We used to see the red and yellow Leo Greco Band bus buzzing up 3rd Avenue en route to gigs. I wondered whether that classic vehicle was still rolling, and presented that question to Leo in an e-mail at WMT. Days later, my phone rang. "Hi Chip. Leo Greco here." I began flailing as if I were Barney Fife. I was blown away.
Leo spent 10 minutes answering my question about the bus and other inquiries about his band. He provided backgrounds on each member, and other details about their performances and pay. I am grateful and honored that this iconic maestro took the time to call.
Thank you for touching all of our lives in some way, Leo. May you rest in peace and rejoin your great band in heaven.

My condolences to the family of Leo Greco. In August 1978; I started part-time with my first radio job at WMT 600, and ran the control board for a short while for "Variety Time". I was amazed at all the people who knew Leo. I talked to him one day in downtown Cedar Rapids. Several people recognized him and said, “Hi, Leo”. I was under the impression this happened very often. Leo Greco was indeed "everybody's friend". During my two years at WMT, Leo always impressed me as a decent man. He always had a positive attitude, and I never heard him speak ill of anyone. While working in radio for the next 25 years, I never ran across another broadcaster like Leo. It was an honor and a privilege to have worked with him. I am saddened by his loss.

Family & friends of Leo Greco, How precious are those who can make such beautiful music. I just loved those opening notes at the end of a radio show, when Leo was

Certainly our Lord has welcomed a very special angel to His heavenly home! I grew up watching Leo & The Pioneers with my parents. We all enjoyed him so much! His lighthearted fun spirit & musical talent was a gift to many!I was honored to meet Leo & Louise in 1975 with the WMT tour in HA.I was only 23 at the time and my folks were very nervous about me going alone.Mom told me to ask them if they would look out for me?!HA Well, I did, & he put his arm around me and told me to tell my mother she had nothing to worry about because they would watch over me INSERT INTO guestbook VALUES (and they did)! Since I had an 85 yr old roommate, Louise took me aside at the prep mtg in HA & told me this lady has been on several trips and knows her way around, that I didn't need to spend every moment with her. I believe we also celebrated Leo and Louises' 30th wedding anniversary there at a dinner show on a ship! What lovely people! Your family has to be so proud of who they were and what they taught you! I know I am and they only touched my life for a wk, but I will never forget their kindness, warmth, and generosity!!!! As he reached out to numerous people over the years to help them, entertain them or just be there for them, I'm very sure Our Lord is wrapping His arms around this great man now and forever! I'll always remember watching Leo Greco & His Pioneers on Saturday evenings over WMT and KGLO while growing up. I also remember a classmate of mine in middle school who came up with his own name for the band that wouldn't be considered very politically correct these days: "Leo Freako and His Pile of Queers." OK, so what so you expect from middle schoolers anyway?
Seriously though, I extend my sincerest condolences to the Greco family on the loss of a genuine Iowa original and broadcasting legend.

In 1980 we had the great good fortune to buy a house on B Avenue right next door to Leo and Louise Greco. No one could make you feel better about life than Leo and Louise. On behalf of the Haehlen families, we would like to extend our sincere sympathy to all of you in the loss of Leo. When your Dad went on the radio, he started his show with "In Heaven There is No Beer". Since the show was on Sunday mornings, my father, Alvin wrote to him, wishing he would start his Sunday shows with a hymn. My family was at Bishops in Lindale Mall one Sunday, and your folks were in front of us. When I asked my Dad if he knew who was in front of him, and he didn't know, I said that it was your father. They talked and from there, the rest is history. I knew him from my working days at Farmers State Bank in Marion when he would come in. His legacy will live on forever in everyone who knew him. It took a special person like him to take time out of his schedule, to attend my Dads visitation. Thank you, Leo for all of the memories you've shared with us and for dedicating songs we have requested through the years. May you rest in peace.
