Memorial
Elver Sorensen, 95, of Cedar Rapids, passed away at his home on December 30, 2021 after a brief illness. Memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Inurnment, with military honors, will be at Cedar Memorial Mausoleum. Elver was born in Nakskov, Denmark on August 3, 1926, son of Karl and Gerda Sorensen. After immigrating to the United States, Elver and his parents lived in Chicago, Illinois. Elver enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and proudly served his country in both WWII and the Korean War. He always said given the chance he would serve again. He truly was part of “The Greatest Generation”.
In the early 1950’s Elver and his family moved to Cedar Rapids where he and his parents ran Sorensen’s Cafeteria at Collins Radio (currently Raytheon Technology) for over 38 years.
Elver loved to laugh until he cried, appreciated all things having to do with nature, a good discussion on politics, and keeping himself in excellent physical and mental condition through exercise and healthy eating. He was an expert marksman and enjoyed competition throughout the state of Iowa with his team.
Mostly Elver loved and adored his family. He was happiest when everyone was together, gathering around the table for a good meal, laughter and sharing stories. He was the patriarch and moral compass of his family and will be forever missed.
Elver was preceded in death by his parents Karl and Gerda Sorensen, and his son Robert Glenn Sorensen.
Elver is survived by his son Scott and Debbie Sorensen and daughter Patricia and J.P. Jacobs; grandchildren: Jennifer Jacobs Strobl, Ericka Sorensen Loffredo Kristine Sorensen, Ashley Jacobs and James Jacobs III and great grandchildren, Emily and Ryan Loffredo and Theresa and Ethan Strobl.
