Betty was my mentor and role model when I was in the Jefferson High School work study program (Cedar Rapids, class of ‘71). Working under her guidance in the art department at the Cedar Rapids Board of Education fed my love for art and design and helped solidify my own decision to become an illustrator. She had a kind heart and beautiful spirit. I will always hold a special place in my heart for her. My condolences to her daughters and family.

Bettie was a beautiful, kind, talented lady and everyone who knew her loved her, She lent her talent to the Cedar Rapids Symphony Follies for many years and when asked to help, she was always right there! What a wonderful treasure it is to have known Bettie! I am so saddened to hear of Bettie’s passing. She was one of the kindest people I have ever known. Whether it was at a horse competition where she was cheering Sarah on, or a crafty event with her calligraphy it was a joy to run into her, get a hug and have a nice chat. The Spaights were neighbors for years. We always will remember Mrs. Spaight taking her walks around the neighborhood. She was always so friendly and always dressed to the Nines!! We knew that she worked at the Board of Education building--and always thought she probably was into the Arts. A great family with nice kids.
