I just found out this morning that my sweet dear friend, Lyle has left us all. I can’t beleive this news at all. My heart has this big whole in it that I can’t describe in words. Rest In Peace Lyle. Prayers sent out to your family. You will be missed my friend Big Time! I knew Lyle from my CR days before we both moved out of state. Those were some crazy, fun, exciting times in my life. You always kept a smile on my face & some crazy thoughts in my head. I’m sorry I could never make it out to Alaska to see ya. How many trips planned & then delayed. My “Alaskan Lyle” will always live in my memories & heart. He was very proud of his girls & his family. I will “see ya when I get there, Lyle”. (Facebook:Cj Musselman)

I knew Lyle in high school, class of 1982 at Kennedy High in Cedar Rapids. He always wore a flannel shirt and had a lot of dark, curly hair, and a great sense of humor. He was an interesting person with a lot of perspective, even as a high school student. No idea if this is true or if it is an exaggerated story / memory, but I once heard that he hollowed out a hole inside of a thick library book and put a large spider inside, closed the book's cover, and returned it to the library, standing nearby to hear the librarian's shriek when she opened it to check it back in. I am sorry that he is gone at such a young age. Condolences to all of his loved ones.

Hello my name is Charlie Rice, the owner of the company Lyle worked for. Lyle was a very kind and sweet hearted person that was my best friend for 28 years and an amazing employee for 21 of those years. He was very dedicated to his work and enjoyed the drives for our road trips all over the state of Alaska. Lyle logged more than 1 million miles on Alaska roads without incident. He did not miss a day of work and enjoyed working with his crew members that also turned out to be great friends. He was a very down to Earth, compassionate and understanding person making friends with everyone he met. I never heard a complaint from him, even when the work day was bad. He brought a very happy, positive and fun energy to everyone he was around and made the work environment enjoyable to new crew members. He will be dearly missed by many people and their families, including my own. You touched the lives of many, rest easy my friend. I'll always think of your whenever I see the color green.. Until we meet again my friend. RIP Lyle Wayne Berns

My deepest sympathy goes out to the Berns family. There will always be memories to help the loss.

I guess it is appropriate for your oldest sister to post first Lyle. The one thing your death is teaching me is that no matter how much it feels like I'm alone in my grief, I'm not. I share your passing with so many others, our parents, sister, nieces, nephews, your daughters, cousins, your boss of 28 years, your Alaska friends, your college friends, your Army buddies. We each will carry a bit of your love light with us until we see each other again.
