David Crew, 88, of Cedar Rapids passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by his loving family. A visitation will be held on Friday, February 24, 2017 from 4:30 to 7 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 310 5th Street SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral services will be on Saturday, February 25 at 11 AM at the church.

David was born on July 23, 1928, the son of Calvin and Bertha (Wagner) Crew. On June 16, 1951, David married the love of his life, Olive Carano; this union produced two children.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Newlin Crew and Maurice Crew, and sisters Elizabeth (Betty) and Janet.

Dave spent most of his childhood in Vinton, IA. Following his graduation from the University of Iowa in 1951 with a degree in Industrial Design, and a two-year tour in the United States Marine Corps, Dave began his career with LeFebure Corporation in Cedar Rapids in 1953. At LeFebure he led the development of the first pneumatic tube drive-up teller system widely used in the banking industry. He retired in 1991 as Vice President of Engineering and Product Development.

Dave was an avid golfer and loved to fly radio-controlled airplanes. He and Olive loved to travel.  In addition, he was a life-long trombone player and played in the New Horizons Band.  He was active as a volunteer for the Linn County History Center and he volunteered with the Senior Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) through Iowa State University.  Dave also served a term on the Linn County Foster Review Board.

He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church since 1953, serving as deacon and elder. Mission-related causes were of special interest; he served as a leader in establishing the church’s Sunday Evening Meals Program, which still exists today.

Left to cherish David’s memories are his wife of 65 years, Olive, children David (Carolyn) Crew and Barbara (Richard) Livingston; 4 grandchildren, John Livingston, Eric (Rosa) Livingston, Catherine Crew, and Brian Crew; one great-grandson, Henry Livingston; and a sister, Lenore Cullman, of Long Beach, CA.

A memorial fund has been established for Dave at First Presbyterian Church of Cedar Rapids.
