Memorial
Fred A. Himes passed peacefully on September 12, 2025. He was able to stay in the home he helped build for his family in 1966 until his death. Fred (also known as Pidge) was born on July 31, 1936, in Jones County Iowa, the second son and last living child of Fred and Mildred Himes. Fred spent his childhood in central Illinois until the family moved to Southwestern Wisconsin. He met Marlene Mitchell at Richland Center High School, and they were married on April 23, 1955. They spent almost 67 years together living in the Cedar Rapids area. Two children joined their family, F. Vincent (Marsha) and Dawn Morgan (Michael). They were blessed with 6 grandchildren, Nichole, Jolene (J.D.), Adam (Cari), Chase (Kayleigh), McKale and Marshall, numerous great grand-children and a few great, great grand babies.
Fred was a proud union member of Local 125 and worked on many power plants in the midwest, at Penford and “sweetner” to name a few places. He received his 55-year pin in August. He was a long-time member of Buffalo UM Church and helped with may outdoor projects and fundraisers. Daddy was known for providing the traditional Christmas Eve Service candy bags for many years. Fred spent a lot of his spare time in his garage fixing, making and designing many things out of metal or wood. He took his family on great adventures, camping and visiting relatives. He also made many special memories on hunting trips with the guys.
Along with his kids, he is survived by his in laws, Bill and Meredith Morgan, Don and Glenda Dobbs, Shirley Himes and Janet Himes and many nieces and nephews. He had a special place in his heart for a young man he helped to raise, Brett Russell and a niece that spent some extra time with them Mari Deets. Proceeding him in death were his wife Marlene and grandson McKale.
Memorials can be directed to the family or Buffalo UM Church.
