Phyllis Brack, 93, formerly of 14 Montrose Ave., passed into eternal life surrounded by her loving family on Friday, February 23, 2024, at Bickford of Marion.

Phyllis was born to John and Janie (Norton) Ford on June 20, 1930. After graduation from Marion High School in 1948, she went to work for United Fire and Casualty Co. She met LaVerne (Blackie) Brack on a date arranged by her brother-in-law, Bud, and they were married on June 26, 1954, at St. Joseh Catholic Church in Marion. They moved to Iowa City to begin married life and she remained there until 2021, when she moved to Bickford for assistance and to be closer to family.

She was primarily a homemaker once children Melissa and Matt came along, then a PTA member and room mother while the kids were at Longfellow Elementary School. She famously sent her kids off to walk to school on a snow day until a neighbor turned them around. (She didn’t have the news on the radio that morning, she explained.) Later, she began a lengthy part-time career with Surgical Services, PC until 1996. In her retirement, she enjoyed serving funeral dinners as a parishioner of St. Patricks Catholic Church, reading, watching Hawkeye sports and Cubs games on TV, gathering with family, and having a good laugh.

She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Torner; son-in-law, Kevin Torner; dear granddaughter, Katie McVay; treasured great-grandson, Karter McVay whose presence brightened her world immensely; daughter-in-law, Kristine Brack; sister-in-law, Vera Brack; very special niece, Claudia Young, and too many nieces, nephews, and extended family from the Brack and Ford families to list.

Phyllis has been joyfully reunited with her husband, Blackie; son, Matt; parents, siblings, Bonnie (Bud) June Young, Sonny (Bev) Ford; Ted Ford and Cheryl Ford, numerous nieces and nephews, in-laws, extended family and many good friends along the way.

Celebration of Life for Phyllis will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Following the Celebration of Life there will be time for prayers led by Deacon Edward Martin.

Inurnment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to April, Nikki, and the nursing staff at Bickford of Marion as well as the entire staff at St. Croix Hospice, for their loving care and compassionate treatment of Mom in her final days.
