George Richard Coontz, 96, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa passed away peacefully Monday, October 1, 2021, at Boyson Heights Assisted Living Center. Visitation and services will be held at a later date.
George was born August 17, 1925, in Denver, Iowa to George and Wilhelmina (Dieckmann) Coontz. After he graduated from high school, he went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University. He served two years in the United States Army, and as a Drill Sergeant he was stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He married the love of his life, Georgianna Kruckenberg, on July 19, 1952, in Luzerne, Iowa. He started and worked for Jones & Coontz Co. up until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and in his younger years was a member of the Harmony Hawks and Toastmasters.
He enjoyed playing golf, bowling, fishing, and traveling. His fondest trips were to Finland, Russia, Germany, Canada, and Alaska. He cherished the time he spent with his family.
George is survived by his loving wife of 69 years Georgianna Coontz; children Donald, Patricia (Mark) Teply, and Carol (Tom) Welbes; along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Cynthia, and his brothers Carl, Vernon, and Romayne.
