Schmit family, I am so sorry to hear about Dr Schmit's passing. Best Dr we had over the years. I am sorry for your loss

Uncle Germain has always held a most precious spot in my heart and will do so forever. He was the most kindest, caring person I ever knew. My cherished memories are of when Dad and Germain got together. (I know he didn't like to be called that - preferred Jim but Dad always insisted we call him by his given name as he always did). Dad's carefree, fun, youthful personality came out each time. They truly cherished each other. Even though Germain was younger, Dad looked up to him. He respected him immensely. The love those two brothers shared was amazing and beautiful. Uncle Germain was a giant of a man in every way possible. He will be terribly missed. Thinking of you all, my cousins. You are in my prayers.

Jim and the Schmit family – Sorry to hear about your loss. Your dad was a caring man and gave us some wise counsel more than a few times. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Rich & Kelly Renner

As family, colleagues, and friends of Dr. Schmit, be assured of my prayers during this time. Dr. Schmit was an outstanding Family Practice physician with excellence in clinical practice, compassion, and faith-filled dedication in his life ministry of health care. His 24/7 availability and responsiveness to patients and their families, nurses and peers were first class and consistently collaborative in advancing the science of medicine and clinical practice. It was a truly privilege to know him as a colleague and witness his respect for specialty practice physicians, nurses and others. Drs, Schmit, Jacobs and Bomkamp, individually and collectively, were truly a ‘gift’. Their giftedness over the years offered significant contributions in saving lives, improving patient outcomes, mentoring colleagues, holding one other accountable to best practices in caring for the people of Cedar Rapids and beyond. More than 50 years ago as a student nurse, I welcomed Dr. Schmit and his young family to a newly constructed residents’ home and that the Sisters of Mercy blessed. Today I join you, as family, in prayer as we celebrate and bless with deep gratitude your father, Dr. Schmit, in his journey home to God.

Jim brought me to Cedar Rapids in 1993 to work with him and Don Bomkamp at MercyCare North. The two of them had essentially invented urgent care in the area and I was proud to be a part of that team for many years. He was a quiet, gentle man, mostly. Funny and kind. He was a tremendous mentor for a young, eager doctor trying to find his way. Thanks, Jim.

My condolences to the Schmit family for the loss of your father and patriarch. I had the good fortune of witnessing a 60+ year friendship between my parents (Rose and John Hennessey) and Jim and Dar (who was my godmother). They were like family to one another. Jim and Dar were mentors to my parents and they shared a life full of memories and laughs. We are thinking of the Schmit family today and beyond. My happy memories give you comfort.

You were my Doctor, my boss and friend. We shared many hours together in the medical profession. Thank you for the wonderful years of kindness and faith. The Schmit family has my deepest sympathy Heaven received a great man! God Bless! RIP

I remember going to Mercy North many times just after it opened. Dr. Schmit took care of me. Just being around him for five minutes showed me that he was a kind and loving person. I will always remember him that way.

To the Schmit family - We are deeply saddened by the news of Jim's passing. God put Jim on this earth with the purpose of caring for people and he fulfilled those intentions with grace and dignity. Please take comfort knowing that Jim lived his life by always putting others first. Earth has lost a great man but Jim and Dar are united again in Heaven. We want you all to know how much we cherished every day of being Jim's neighbor. Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with the Schmit family during this difficult time.

Anne and Schmit family- Sorry to hear about the passing of your dad. I would see him every week in church before Covid. He was such a kind man. Cherish the memories. Pat (Renner)Ashlock

Laura, Mike & family, I wanted you to know that my thoughts and prayers go out to you at this difficult time. I always thought your dad was a very nice man. May he rest in peace

I was an in-home caregiver for Dr. Schmit for over three years. He was a joy to work with as he was very easy going and had a great sense of humor. Some things I recall fondly about Dr. Schmit are that he enjoyed relaxing on his porch watching the deer and other wild life in his yard, and he loved ice cream! He was a wonderful man and will be missed. My deepest sympathy to his family.

We were neighbors for over 20 years, when we moved here he was still running. Very nice man, our sympathy to his family. Sally and Dan Baumgartner

Dr schmit may have been the best doctor I've ever experienced. He diagnosed me with diabetes in 1963. His care and direction were instrumental with my juvenile diabetes. Medicine has lost a caring and competent physician. I have always been so thankful that he was my physician.

Dr. Schmit was a truly caring person. He treated me and my young family with gentleness and compassion and supported us through both joys and troubles. My deepest sympathy to the Schmit family for your loss.

My deepest sympathy to the Schmit family for the loss of such a wonderful man. The three musketeers are practicing in heaven now, may they Rest In Peace together.

Thanks for being such a wonderful dr at mercy care north, you were the reason I went there when I was sick.....You were such a caring dr and always listened to your patients first.....RIP
