It was my privilege to know, and work with Joe. We worked together from 1977 until his retirement. Joe was an exceptionally kind and caring person. I often helped Joe and Jan with home projects, he was always willing to help a young man earn some extra money. Joel and Jon are a couple of years older than my two sons. So consequently, Out of Joe and Jan's generosity my boys were always well outfitted with coats, boots and all other clothing young boys need. Can not overstate how kind and helpful this was for a young couple. Thank You. Over the years when Joe came in for care at Mercy, he would ask to see me. I always received joy from visiting with him. Joe had that effect with people. My sincere condolences to Jan , Joel and Jon. It was an honor to be his friend. In Christ, Jim & Linda Meyers Family

Occasionally Joe and I would look at each other and wonder just how much "fun" we were going to have in the OR that day. Both of us may have needed a little pep talk, but we always made it with smiles at the end. Often Joe and I would look at the cases for the day and wonder how much "fun" we were going to have. Perhaps both of us might have needed a little pep talk, but, in the end, we persevered with smiles. Proud to have him part of the Orthopaedic and Anesthesiolgy Team for many years when we were both younger. Peace

I met Joe when we classmates and fraternity brother at U of Iowa medical school. We were close friends and enjoyed each other company. And I remember that he always pronounced my last name in the Eastern U.S. fashion, with a hard “g”. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time. Just remember all the good times.

Probably 40 years ago that I met Joe when I worked in the recovery room. It came time that I needed his medical expertise when I needed several surgeries. I knew he was going to take excellent care of me and never worried. He would place his hand on my cheek, smile and tell me it would be ok. Professionally and after our retirements I got to see him or hear from him thru emails. Such a special soul. RIP Joe...you made a difference!

Jan and Family, My heart goes out to you. Joe was a great soul and exceptional physician. Though he retired shortly after I started, I certainly enjoyed talking with him whenever he would visit. Heaven has gained an angel. Wishing you peace in this difficult time.
