Dear Mary Lou and family We recently read in The Witness of Art's recent death. We are so sorry and offer our prayerful sympathy. We remember you from past dental conventions when Dick Haw (Dave's former associate) introduced us to you both. What a delightful couple you were! We always remembered you fondly. We are sorry to hear of your loss but wanted to say what a wonderful dentist Dr. Van Cleve was - as a young girl in the early 60's I began going to see him and because of his gentle ways I never feared a dental appointment - loved how he would hum as he worked on our teeth - our children also went to him and continued with Dr. Joe after Dr. Art retired. He was by far the best dentist we have ever been to.

Dear Van Cleve Family, I am sooooo sorry to hear of Art's passing. He was such a great guy and I always loved coming over to your family home and seeing him and Mary Lou every time I visited. I have so many fond memories of your family. I love all of you guys dearly....May God bless your family with peace at this tough time. Know I'm praying for you all in Jesus Name....

Dear Van Cleve Family, We are so sad to hear this news about our Beloved Uncle Art. He was such a genuinely sweet and caring man not to mention a great Uncle. Sending Much Love and Sympathies... John and Amy: Mesa Arizona

So sorry to hear about Art's passing, I always enjoyed visiting with him at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Keeping Mary Lou and family in our prayers.

To the Family Van Cleve: There aren’t the words to express my sorrow for your loss or the great Joy that the first Doc Van Cleve has finally been given access directly to Christ’s kingdom, and a welcome into Christ’s loving embrace. He was just such a genial and calming presence, with a patience for all - including Joe’s erstwhile loudmouth pals. God bless you all! All of you - “Mom” Mary Lou, Kelly, Joe “Sky Dentist”, Jim, Jay “Chopper”, Kathy, your spouses, kids, grandkids and dogs!(sorry.... just can’t do cats!) With great affection - Jake Brian Jacobs, Julie, Maggie, Molly, and “Chicken Marie” the wonder runt/mutt

Dr VanCleve was my first dentist starting in the early 60's until his retirement. I am sorry for your loss.

Art was my 1st dentist back in the 1980's and we go along great. I have since moved on to other dentists and I always mentioned his name. I remember that he always sang to me while he was working on my teeth and every once in a awhile I would crack a joke with my mouth open and we both laugh. I never knew him personally but sometimes he would talk about his kids and I kinda felt that I knew him. I always and will always remember Art now and in heaven. See ya later.

My deepest sympathy to the family Linda Earley

I remember so much of Art. I began working at the house- helping with the kids in 7th grade- maybe 1966. I spent many years in and out of their home. Art would take me home when he got home for work. I remember the talks in the car. He never talked down to me and we always found something to talk about. He seemed to have so much knowledge. He was one of those men I looked at as a really good father/husband/man I have told my kids and grandkids many stories of those days. My trying to help get bags of grass into the trunk and throwing it over my shoulder - only to find the bags had been sitting a few days- it broke and believe me I stunk. I later admired Art for helping me see the funny in it. I wish I had managed to see him before he passed to tell him what a great influence he had on me.

Dr. VanCleve was my first dentist, I went to him as a 4th grader when he opened his practice at 18th St. & Johnson Avenue in CR. I both feared him and admired him, as to us little kids the dentist was a scary person. But he was truly good, and helped keep my teeth in decent shape. That was about 6 decades ago, and he has always been a welcome encounter for many years when I would return to Cedar Rapids. I also appreciated his friendliness and discussions when I would encounter him at the Cornell wrestling matches of his sons Jay & Joe. My heartfelt condolences to his family. He was a personality who defined the goodness I remember of Cedar Rapids.
