Mary Katherine Holmes, 103, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died of pneumonia on Saturday, February 23rd in Marble Falls, TX. Mary was preceded in death by her parents Lucille and Thomas Knapp; her husband, Leo S. Holmes; and her sister, Agnes Ruhlman.
Mary was born on November 28, 1915 in Cedar Rapids; and married Leo S. Holmes on May 29, 1938. She enjoyed bowling, golf, volunteering at local hospitals, bingo, SkipBo, knitting, was a member of the Grand Chapter of the Iowa Order of the Eastern Star, and a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church until her relocation to Texas in the early 1980’s. Her greatest joy came from her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include daughter Cynthia Anderson and husband Donald of Burnet, TX; son Thomas Holmes and wife Sarah, of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Carin Ponder and husband Rusty, Bryan, TX; Melisa Waskevich and husband John, Midland, MI; Hillary Winkler, Lake Oswego, OR; Ashley Holmes, Duvall, WA; and nine great-grandchildren, Dylan Ponder; Henry and Ruthie Waskevich; Sarah, Joey and Tommy Winkler; Morgann, Zachary and Abby Hetherington, and many caring and loving nieces.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Granite Mesa Healthcare Center in Marble Falls, TX for their love and care over the past eight years.
A family gathering will be held in late Summer to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the American Heart Association in her memory.
