Memorial

Donn Carnal, 95, of La Crosse, WI, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died August 24th, 2018 at Bethany St. Joseph in La Crosse.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 15 at 1 PM at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer officiating.  A private family burial will be held.

Donn was born at home on December 28, 1922 in Tama, IA to parents E.C. and Grace (Kentner) Carnal, who preceded him in death.  After graduating from Tama High School in 1940, he attended Parsons College in Fairfield, IA for two years until enlisting in the U.S. Navy on Oct 21, 1942.  After serving 36 months in the Navy on board the U.S.S. Orion he returned to Tama in 1946 and married H. Arlette Rugg at the First Methodist Church on December 29th, 1946.  Arlette and Donn moved to Fairfield, where Donn graduated from Parsons College in 1948.  He then taught school in LeRoy, IA for three years, where his son Richard was born.  They then moved to Estherville, IA, where they lived for 5 years, before moving to Cedar Rapids where he spent 23 years with Rockwell Collins and 8 years with DCASMA.  

Donn was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Arlette and his brother Richard.  

He is survived by his son Richard, three grandchildren Autumn, Casey, and Oakley, and eight great-grandchildren:  Oliver, Maizey, Casper, Zalia, Riley, Rowan, Cabrini, and Henry.  

Donn was a Mason, Shriner, and spent 32 years as a member of El Kahir Shrine Drum and Bugle Corps.  He was also a lifetime member of Legion Post 298, belonged to the Indian Creek Country Club, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and the National Contract Managers Association.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shrine Children’s Hospital or St. Paul’s Methodist Church.
