Memorial

The talented and charming Daniel H. Langfield left our earthly company on Sunday, December 10th, 2017, to meet his Maker and attempt to gain passage to heaven.

Dan was born May 6, 1939, in Regina Saskatchewan Canada, where he resided until the death of his father in 1948.   The following year, his mother moved the family to the US, where they took up residence in Austin Texas.  Dan attended St. Edwards High School, where he graduated as valedictorian.  He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in radio and Television Broadcasting from University of Texas in 1962.

After a successful career in broadcasting, followed by a career as Director of a Community Action Agency in Dubuque, Iowa, Dan became Executive Director of the Linn County Medical Society in 1983.  In 1985, he and Dr. John Lohnes established Eastern Iowa Health Care, an Independent Practice Association.  From1987- 2016, Dan also served as consultant to Mercy Medical Staff in Iowa City Iowa.  He remained at all times loyal to the physicians he represented, and carried a deep-seated distrust of hospitals as the evil empire.

Although widely known to be intelligent, acerbic, and quick-witted, for those who knew him well, Dan also embodied a spirit of generosity and genuine kindness.  He loved slow-dancing women and fast-moving automobiles.  He gave without hesitation when he saw the opportunity to be of service to his fellow man.  Dan loved his children and grandchildren fiercely, and they remain his proudest achievement on this earth.

Dan left behind a firm belief in God, the communion of saints, and a deep appreciation for his friends and family.  It was his belief that he will be with all of his loved ones again in a better place, one day soon.

Dan joins his wife, Trudy, who preceded him in death in 1990, and son Hal, who died shortly after his birth in 1968.  He is survived by his sisters Jill Metzger and Delyse Alsup, of Texas; his dear friend of 40 years, Mary O’Connell, his son Danny, daughter Diana, god-daughter Megan Cox, and 5 grandchildren; Jordan, Holden and Kaily Speer,  Bella and Zack Langfield.
