Duane Barnhart 92, of Cedar Rapids, Died Monday August 8, 2016 in his home from a sudden illness. A gathering will be held on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories Stateroom. The Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 15, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by Cedar Memorial Certified Celebrant Dr. James Coyle. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his life companion, Mae Howes, his children; Steven (Carola Marcano) Barnhart of Mission, Texas, Larry (Donna Bonci) Barnhart of Nicholasville, Kentucky, Michael (Beth Richardson) Barnhart of Toddville, Iowa, Janan Barnhart of Hiawatha, Iowa, Sara (David) Olson of Iowa City, Iowa, Dave (Brenda) Howes of Chetek, Wisconsin and Laurie (Ted) Downes of Naperville, Illinois, his brother, William Barnhart of Punta Gorda, Florida. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Betty Beck.
Duane was born February 26, 1924 in Bloomfield, Iowa, the son of John and Neva (Shepherd) Barnhart. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1948. He worked as an Engineer and Manager for Norton Company in Worcester Massachusetts for 33 years. Upon retirement, he returned to Iowa to assist his parents with the family farm. He also volunteered at Family Services Inc.,The Science Station and served on the Linn County Zoning Commission for 9 years. Later in retirement he enjoyed travel, golf, gardening and spending time with his family.
Duane served in the Army during World War II receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart during the Philippines Campaign.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army in memory of Duane.
