Richard “Dick” Gladson, 88, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 20, 2015. Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at Hope United Church of Christ in Hiawatha with visitation starting at 9:00am at the church. A visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home. Officiating: Pastor Mary Beth Hartenstein. Burial with military honors: 3:30 p.m. at Warren County Memorial Park in Monmouth, Illinois by Pastor Sue Shike.
Dick was born on November 8th, 1927, the son of Bruce and Vera (Short) Gladson in Monmouth, Illinois. He was united into marriage to Lois Shike on September 12, 1953. Dick served in the Merchant Marines from 1945 to 1947, and the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. He managed the Rock Island Millwork/Huttig Sash and Door for thirty-six years before retiring in 1992.
Dick enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and golf. He liked watching golf, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Chicago Cubs. On October 20, 2015, Dick went on the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight to Washington D.C. It was a memorable day of reflection, honor, and pride.
He will be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Gladson of Cedar Rapids; two children, Steve (Deb) Gladson of Cedar Rapids, Larry (Julie) Gladson of Cedar Rapids, daughter-in-law Jody Gladson of Rochester, MN; four grandchildren, Lindsay (Ben) Blood, Matthew (Erica Daugherty) Gladson, Kimberly (Nick) Kray, Marc (Carolyn Daman) Gladson; four great-grandchildren, Kaelynne and Ryker Blood; and Jackson and Nora Kray.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, David Gladson.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the entire staff of Manor Care Health Services, and DaVita Dialysis Center for their excellent care of Dick over the past few weeks.
