John D. Hornstein, age 87, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls after a sudden illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, June 9, 2014 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories with Deacon Phil Saunders officiating. Visitation will be held 3-5:00 PM Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

John was born October 11, 1926 in Linn County, Iowa to John Andrew and Mirl (Healy) Hornstein. He was united in marriage to Janet L. Wieland on June 10, 1950 in Cedar Rapids. John was an especially devoted husband and loved Janet and his family very much.
John was employed as an office and credit manager at Cuckler Steel Span Company in Monticello and retired in 1988. He had been a resident of Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls for the last four years. In his younger years he enjoyed sports, and was most active in golf and tennis. He also supported his sons in all of their athletic endeavors. After he retired, John and Janet enjoyed taking long walks and vacations to new destinations. John had traveled to every state except Alaska. He kept his mind sharp and enjoyed playing bridge and solving crossword and sudoku puzzles.
John is survived by sons John Steven Hornstein of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Scott A. (Joyce) Hornstein of Huxley, Iowa; and brothers Eldon and Burton Hornstein, both of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his wife Janet in 2012; his parents; and twin sisters Leola Thibadeau and Viola Riley, and half sister Eleanor Raitt.
