Jim Styers, 89, of Cedar Rapids passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 19, 2013 from 5 to 7 PM at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home with a vigil service starting at 5 PM. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at 11 AM, with a visitation beginning an hour prior, at All Saints Catholic Church with the Rev. John R. Flaherty. Burial will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery with military honors following the mass.Jim Styers was born on September 14, 1923 in New York City. He proudly served in the US Army during WWII. Jim was united in marriage to Therese Cavanaugh on August 17, 1948 in Harpers Ferry, Iowa. Jim was a big believer in higher education. He received his under graduate degree in 1948 and his Master’s Degree in 1950 from Notre Dame, where he also ran track. He received a Master’s Degree and his Doctorate in engineering from the University of Iowa. Jim was part of the Alumni Association of Notre Dame. He followed anything sports related especially the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Jim was an engineer in advanced research at Rockwell Collins for over 35 years. He was an active member of All Saints Church taking communion to shut-ins and worked on the building and grounds committee. He also volunteered at the American Cancer Society. He loved handball, biking, running, traveling and woodworking. He was competitive, determined, and had an amazing spirit about him. The three things that were most important to Jim were his family, his faith, and living life to its fullest. He will be greatly missed.Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Therese; children, Cecelia Trujillo and Tom (Frances) Styers both of Stockton, CA; Anne (Karlos) Armstrong of Marion; Mary Styers of San Diego, CA; and Laura (Larry) Fox of Tacoma, WA; 7 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Joe Styers.Memorial donations may be directed to the American Cancer Society or All Saints Catholic Church.
