Dear Scott and Joyce, Dean and I have been vacationing in Alaska the past ten days and just heard of your brother's passing. We are sorry to hear of your loss and our thoughts and prayers are wth you. Dean and Marty

What a shock! I met John while living in Merrill House-3rd floor Bender Hall at UNI. Always in a good mood and fun to talk to and be with. Then I ran into him again at the City Clerks office when renewing pet licenses. Always tried to give him a hard time about something and all he would do is laugh at it and give it back. I've tried to spread the news to as many former Merrill housers as I can. Hope to attend the open house/celebration this Saturday>

Scott and Joyce, Sorry to hear about the passing of "Horn". He was the best friend I had in high school. I remember being up at your house and playing cards or ping pong. I was a terrible player. Horn, you, and your Dad always beat me with out any trouble. But when you three would play against each other it was "war". Nobody ever gave an inch. I will always cherish those memories !!!

Scott & Joyce We are so sorry for your loss. The service today was beautiful and such a tribute to Steve. The music took me back to our high school days and we could feel Steve's presence. For those of us that had the gift of his friendship for so many years, we were truly blessed. He had a passion for living life to its fullest and made every person he met feel like they were the most important person he had encountered. Our lives were enriched by his friendship. With heartfelt sympathy. Fran and Carmine

My husband and I both worked at the City of Cedar Falls and have known John for close to forty years. He was the nicest, kindest person I have ever known. He was always so helpful whenever we had a concern and NEVER made you feel stupid for asking! He and I had some running jokes that we shared over the years! I will never forget them. We exchanged Christmas cards every year since we retired and moved to Florida. I was so looking forward to running into him this year at Sturgis Falls. He was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed by friends, coworkers, and neighbors. It's so hard to believe he is gone.

Scott & Joyce . . . our sincere sympathies at the loss of Steve. I was just thinking a lot of him during the week prior as we have been making plans for our 45th class reunion in September. When he joined the public school after Sacred Heart High School closed, the Class of 1970 added a wonderful classmate. I don't think he had missed any of our reunions and what a conversationalist he was! He definitely will be missed. One thing I have missed seeing in our Monticello neighborhood is his entire family on their walk down by the fairgrounds. My how you all walked at a pretty healthy clip. Yes, we have many memories, and we will especially remember him at our reunion. Love to you both...Jenny & Pat Lambert

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with John for many years as an employee of the City of City Falls. John was an easygoing and very likeable person. In the City Clerks Office, John was the one I could always count on to help with my concerns. He was also a good friend. Paul Hoffey, Chief of Police (ret)

I worked for the City of Cedar Falls with John for many years. I worked in the Print Shop and did all the City's printing. John was always the most kind and thoughtful person to work with. He could always put a smile on your face. I am so sorry for your loss, and I will miss him as well. Sincerely, De McGourty

Dear Scott and Joyce, Our deepest sympathies go out to you. We will never forget Steve. He was one of a kind. "What a guy!" "What a competitor---will never forget his unwillingness to lose---- will always remember the sweat poring off of him as he chased down a ball and hit that remarkable two-hand backhand." The Hornstein team was formidable and never to be forgotten. Our thoughts are with you through these difficult times. Jerry and Madeline Schubick

Scott. My heart goes out to you in your time of loss. I am glad you have Joyce by your side. I didn't know your brother but I know the bonds of siblings and Jan said it so eloquently above. Know that the class of 72 stands in support.

Scott and Joyce, My heart is breaking for you. There really are no words...the bond between siblings is so special. Just know that we are all thinking of you at this difficult time, and we pray that your wonderful memories will get you through this. Hugs to both of you. Dan and Cindi (Peterson) Recker

Scott and Joyce, Holding you close in my thoughts and prayers! A Spanish author, Clara Luz Zúñiga Ortega, shared " To the outside world we all grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we always were. We know each other's hearts. We share private family jokes. We remember family feuds and secrets, family griefs and joys. We live outside the touch of time." May you take comfort as you share memories and remember a life taken much too soon. God Bless, Jan

Scott & Joyce: Steve was a great friend from childhood on. We have many memories of our past adventures with him. He was always up to doing things, being a road trip over the weekend, sporting events, movies, and playing sport games like basketball at the Iowa City Fieldhouse. We will miss Steve, a great friend and classmate, and he will always be in our thoughts. Jim & Jana Brashaw

Dear Scott, I have so many memories of wonderful times with your family in Monticello. I am saddened to hear of Steve's passing. I will always remember his kindness. Holding you and your family in prayer. With love, Lori
