John Steven (Steve) Hornstein, 63, of Cedar Falls, Iowa passed away on Wednesday June 17, 2015 from complications after hip replacement surgery. Funeral services will be held in Cedar Rapids at 11:00am on June 24 in the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories with burial to follow. Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00pm on June 23 at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. In addition, an open house / celebration of life will be held June 27 from 3:00-5:00pm in the Windridge West Lounge (Western Home Communities) at 5311 Hyacinth in Cedar Falls.
Steve was born December 14, 1951 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of John D. and Janet (Wieland) Hornstein. The family moved to Monticello in 1957 where he graduated from Monticello Community High School in 1970. He then attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, graduating in 1974 with a business degree. He went to work for the city of Cedar Falls where he was Deputy City Clerk until retirement in 2007. Steve is survived by his brother Scott (Joyce) of Huxley. Steve was preceded in death by his parents.
Steve loved athletics and maintained detailed memories of every football and baseball game that he was involved in. He especially enjoyed golf and liked to compete with his dad, brother, and sister-in-law. He often traveled with family, spending time sightseeing and attended many art festivals. He was an avid collector, never passing on the chance to complete a Special Edition Set of almost anything. However, primarily Steve enjoyed visiting with people. He was truly a friend to all, eager to listen and talk to anyone as if part of their family.
