I just tried to call Barry and I'm shocked and saddened to learn of his passing. Barry and I were stationed together at the Navy Nuclear Power School in the late '70s where we attended church together and became fast friends. Barry was a gentle soul and he never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was in my wedding party in '79 and I have fond memories of him and his lovely wife Allison. Barry, rest your oars, we have the watch. Fair winds and following seas, my friend. I know that you are missed by all who knew you. God Bless you and your family.

On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans (USSVI), we offer our sincere condolences to Alison and all of the Schenkelberg family and friends in your loss and sorrow. May God whisper peace into your hearts and comfort and heal them. We are grateful for Barry's service to our country in the U.S. Submarine Service. To our “Brother of the Dolphin” … "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. May you rest in peace and may God bless your loved ones who remain. Thank you for your service to our country." -- Rev. Ray Fritz, National Chaplain United States Submarine Veterans, USSVI.

Sparkling eyes, quick to show an uneven smile and always able to think of things from different angles. Barry was one of the people who I've met in my life that I wanted to be like, but I didn't quite have the type of courage he did. Barry was so open and welcoming to people that they easily found a shared perspective. And that sudden laugh...oh, how wonderful. I was traveling over the course of the last week and, in reviewing newspapers, learned of his passing. May all the angels, Saints, holy men and holy women welcome him into God's eternal Grace. A wonderful fellow in life and rich memories remain for me. And how many ways could people bollix up Schenkleberg? Oh my! :) God Bless the memory of Barry Schenkleberg.

On behalf of the USSVI Submarine Service of Iowa, I would like to send our condolences to you and your family for the loss of you Love One Barry. I only knew him as the Base Commander of the Iowa Base, but he was well respected by the group at the Iowa Base. Fair Winds and Following Seas.

Our deepest sympathy for the loss of Barry. What a nice man he was. We will always remember him at The Londoner quiz nights!

All members of United States Submarine Veterans - Iowa Base send our prayers and condolences to Barry's family. He was a joy to have around and will be missed by all.

We were shocked and saddened to learn of Barry's death. We met Barry when he was part of our Renew group years ago. He was a kind, gentle, thoughtful man. He now rests in peace. May God grant his family strength and peace.

Having just seen Barry last week, we were shocked at his sudden death. Our deepest sympathy to Alison and all the family. Barry was a member of our St. Pius Church Renew Group several years ago, a delightful and friendly man. God bless.

So sorry to hear about Barry. My fond memory of Barry is carrying his new puppy Humbug on their "walks" for the first month or two when he got him. I enjoyed our talks when I would be outside when he walked by. My thoughts and prayers to Alison and family. Tammy Schwartz Prior neighbor on Cottonwood

Alison and family, I'm so sorry we can't be there to celebrate Barry 's life with you. He will be thoroughly missed. I'll never forget his bright smile and quick wit. I can picture him walking into Scott's with his Kindle and telling me I better get to Curves or I'll miss something important. Great picture. Hugs to everyone.
