My sincere condolences to the McIvor families. I am so sorry to just learn now that John had passed, but know that he is finally in a better place and at peace and grateful for his family. And, comforted to know that he'll be welcomed to heaven by an old IC classmate of his, my Mom. There was no better guy at the Cedar Rapids Gazette than Johnny McIvor. Everybody loved him! I can just picture him pacing the sidelines of a sporting event, bantering with all the people who recognized him (EVERYBODY knew him) and just having a blast to be doing what he was doing. He had some great stories and an uncanny knowledge of the history of Cedar Rapids, and all the families and members he had taken pictures of. He was also a proud veteran who went on to make himself one of the best photographers and most well-liked people in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding communities. God bless you, John. It was a privilege and honor to have worked with you and call you a friend.

I also have very fond memories of working at The Gazette with John -- or Johnnie as we would call him sometime. I enjoyed his sense of humor, with most memories of him during fun and funny times. Among one of the funniest stories about Johnnie was when he was assigned to take photos at a beauty pageant. In his way, which we all loved, he efficiently and quickly directed his photo subjects: "OK. All of you losers get off of the stage so I can shoot the winners." I wasn't present on this occasion, but always enjoyed this story, told over and over through the years. That was Johnnie, a man on a mission and, frequently, saying things the way the were. He is among my many great friends and memories from The Gazette . . . Blessings to you, old friend, and your family.

Johnny was a family friend for decades. I remember him first coming to our house at Christmas to shoot photos. Later, when I became a Gazette reporter, I knew him as a colleague. He was a character, a hard-working funny, kind man. My dad, Gus Schrader, worked with him for many, many years. On behalf of my brother, Steve; sister, Melissa, and myself, our condolences.

When I was in Kirkwoods photography program I job shadowed with John he was so nice. I later work at the Gazette as a graphic designer, so not directly with him. I am so sorry for your loss he was a great man.

I worked with John at The Gazette ... I was fresh out of college and he was a seasoned pro who taught me so much. Always patient, always laughing, always looking for the best in those around him. I hope his family finds peace in knowing Johnny lived life the way it should have been lived -- to the fullest and beyond!
