Survivors include a daughter Michele Hanus and her husband Martin and two granddaughters, Courtney and Allison Hanus.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa, and his parents.

John was born August 21, 1927 in Cedar Rapids to Joseph and Johannah (Fix) McIvor.  He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after his junior year at Immaculate Conception School, and returned to finish high school after four years of service.  He was recalled for the Korean War, and served there for one year.  He served three years with the Marine Corps “Commandant’s Own” Drum and Bugle Corps in Washington D.C. and six months with the Camp Pendleton Post Band.

He married Theresa Pisarik on June 6, 1959 in Cedar Rapids.  He was employed by The Gazette in the photo department as a photo finisher and photographer, retiring there after forty-three years in 1992.

He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, the Organ Choir, Funeral Choir, and the Catholic Layman’s Club.  He was also a past member of the American Legion Hanford Post 5, past member of the Iowa Press Photographers Association, life member of the National Press Photographers Association, and the Cedar Valley Detachment Marine Corps League.

He enjoyed all sports, particularly football, traveling, singing in the organ and funeral choirs, taking pictures in his spare time, and visiting with his grandchildren.

He was a huge advocate for Camp Courageous.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous or to the family.

The family would like to thank all the residents and staff from the Northbrook Manor Care Center and Hospice of Mercy for their love, support, and tender care given to John.  We love you all.  The family of John McIvor.
