John was a man who really touched my heart. He was so kind and soft spoken. I enjoyed bible study with John and loved to hear his wisdom on the topics. I know he missed his wife and I am happy he is with her again. John and Joyce came to our house for Easter dinner and he met my dad from Illinois. When I told my dad that John Steele had past away, he asked"the one who shared his bird books with me?" :) John touched lives wherever he went and was truly someone to be admired. My prayers go out to all who will miss John until we see him again in Glory.

John was a member of my lodge. He was a good friend and a good Mason. I considered him a good spirit who made things better with his presence. I celebrate his life as we are better because he was here. As we are all bound to return to that house not made with hands, we can take solace in the fact John will be there to greet us. Well done good and faithful servant. William C. Jacobson

John was a very nice man. Always pleasant to visit with. We enjoyed knowing him in NARFE and having him at our meetings.

My friend John, years ago you shared your memoir of WWII with me. You were America's greatest generation. I asked you lots of questions, you shared stories and shed a few tears. My favorite story I got to share with you was about a career military buddy of mine I grew up with but hadn't seen for 15 years. I got to spend an afternoon with him just talking while we were canoeing the Wapsipinicon. You instantly knew that was a big day for me; what an honor to know you.

Joyce, Rocky and I will miss seeing john at Sally's and the chameleons such a kind and wonderful man, god bless your family. Charlie Heins

John was one of my first clients and over 28 years became a great friend. There are not many people that are as kind and compassionate as John. I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers to Joyce and family. Bill Happel

I met John at Mt. Hermon Lodge in Cedar Rapids and was always impressed with his calm and comforting nature with all. My thoughts and prayers to the family.

John was a quiet, calming presence whenever you saw him at church. Until his health deteriorated to the point of not being able to, he always made sure to listen to the weekly sermons. He was an older man that stayed true to his heart, and knew it was okay to shed a tear every now and then. I remember sending John a letter, thanking him for his service and commitment to our country. He was able to go on a surprise trip (through the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight) to the World War II and Korean War Veteran memorial in Washington D.C., and read the letters from his friends and family en route. John was also passionate about tending to his roses. He pinned one onto me during my Confirmation; he hugged me, and whispered how proud he was of watching me grow into a smart, young woman, and how excited he was that I was becoming a member of his Church. I will miss you John, and I know that this final stage was tough. Now you can finally be at peace.

Joyce, I was very sorry to hear of your dad's passing. What a special man. God bless you ! Susan Meyer-Reed
