Edith Mae Wheat, 77 of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Evansville, IN, passed away peacefully on Tuesday April 14, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. Services at 11:00AM on Monday at St. James United Methodist Church. Rev. Carol Sundberg will officiate. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday. There will also be funeral services held at 11 AM on Wednesday at the Nobles Chapel United Methodist Church in Elberfeld IN, with burial to follow in the Nobles Chapel Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Bennie of Cedar Rapids and son, Michael of Phoenix, AZ; her sisters, June Mauck of Hobart. IN, Jeanne Phillips of Belleville, MI, and Pat (Steve) Knapp of Evansville, IN; her brothers, Nolan Simpson of Ft. Branch, IN, Cledith (Judy) Simpson of Marietta, GA, and Jerry (Jackie) Simpson of Haubstadt, IN.

Edith was born in Gentryville, IN on November 26, 1937, the daughter of Alton and Tillie Simpson, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Haubstadt High School in 1955. She attended Lockyear’s Business College. After graduation she worked as an executive assistant for several companies, including Iglehart Brothers and Mead Johnson Nutritionals in Indiana and in Iowa at Cherry Burrell, J Tech, and later from Frank Magid & Associates. 

Edith enjoyed gardening, flowers, puzzles, and travel and attended her family reunions annually in the Evansville area. She also loved her church and congregation at St. James United Methodist Church. 

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
