Charles Opatrny, 96, passed away Thursday, August 28, at his home in Evergreen Estates. As per his request no services are planned.

Charles is survived by his son; John Opatrny, and special friend, Florence Ramsay, both of Cedar Rapids; his nieces and nephews in France and Czech Republic.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

Charles was born to Anna and Joseph Opatrny on August 4, 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio. At two years old he and his family returned to Czechoslovakia where he completed his education and worked in international business. He returned to the United States where he eventually settled in Cedar Rapids working for National Oats. He also taught German, French, Spanish and Czech. At 80 he earned master’s degrees in French and German from UNI. He was a devoted supporter of the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library. Charles was an avid reader who also enjoyed classical music and opera.
