Wayne A. Murdock,91 of Cedar Rapids passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Sunday, March 24, 2024. He leaves behind a legacy as a beloved family man, a Navy veteran and a pillar of his community in which he loved so much.

Wayne will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Shirley (Hostak)and their four children, Mark, Vicki, Mike and Michelle. He also had 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Born on April 20, 1932 in Cedar Rapids to Donald D. Sr and Hazel (Putnam)Murdock, his journey was one defined by service, devotion and enjoyment. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1950 he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Korean War.

Wayne dedicated 42 years of his entire working career proudly serving the City of Cedar Rapids in which 14 of those were serving as “The Streets Commissioner” while on the City Council. He also had a brief stint as the Mayor pro tem at the end of his career before retiring in 1994.

Throughout his life Wayne enjoyed many hobbies that included fast and slow pitch softball in which he was inducted into the CR Softball Hall of Fame, golf, bowling, tennis and horseshoes. He also enjoyed fishing trips to Canada. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

Wayne had A LOT of love for the Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers and most of all, the Iowa Hawkeyes. He had a mancave in his basement dedicated to them all where he spent many hours cheering them on.

No matter where Wayne went, he was always the life of the party and he never met a stranger. Please join the family for an Open House Celebration of Wayne’s life on Saturday, April 20th from 1-4 at Leonardo’s on 16th Ave SW.
