Vern Schadt, 71, died peacefully on Friday, March 15, 2024, after a long battle with interstitial lung disease. He was good-natured to the very end, endearing him to all his caregivers.
His children, Jason, Justin and Ava, honored his wish to remain in his home as long as possible. With their loving care, he remained there until his last few hours, which were spent at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
Left to mourn him are his mother, Polly Schadt of Cedar Falls; his son, Jason Schadt (Brenton Thompson) of Iowa City; son, Justin Schadt; daughter, Ava Schadt; and his close companion, Elizabeth Rowden, all of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving Vern are his treasured siblings, Linda McKinney (Dale) of Sioux City; Carl Schadt (Debbie) of Cypress, Texas; Luan Mohr of Marshalltown; and Mary Cormany (Andrew Peters) of Waterloo.
Preceding him in death was his father, Bill Schadt.
Vern held many jobs in his lifetime, ranging from armored truck driver to school bus driver. He spent decades in management at Armstrong’s Department Store, and New Life Fitness World, finishing his working years at Gilcrest Jewett Lumber Company in Coralville, as a crane operator. Along the way, Vern lit up the night sky at important events through his searchlight business, Skysearcher Rental.
Vern had many interests. He flew airplanes and ultralights, rode motorcycles, owned speed boats and Corvettes. He could strike up a conversation with anyone who also had, or wanted to have, one of those things. But beyond tangible possessions, Vern had the love and respect of his family. He was always a good role model to his children, a loving son, brother and friend.
Special recognition for their devotion goes to Linda, Dale, Carl, Debbie, and Carter, whose help during Vern’s illness was invaluable.
A tribute to Vern’s life is being planned, with details announced soon. All who cared about him will be welcome. A memorial fund has been established. Contributions should be directed to the family.
