I'm sorry about this being a very late post, as I just found about Phil's death a year late, I have known Phil Slingluff since 1983 (I was 13 years old then) when he worked on 3rd shift at the downtown central fire station, he was probably the nicest fire fighter I have ever known, I remember we would sit and watch wrestling if he happened to be working on a saturday afternoon, I remember I would have Phil laughing as I would imitate the angry wrestlers, so much fun to be around, when I started hanging around the fire station he would show me around and how the fire equipment worked, one time the fire dispatcher one summer day told all the firemen that there was a tornado warning in the northern part of the county and Phil took me up to the fire station roof to view the storm clouds, he was just an all out super nice guy and will truly be missed by myself and so many more, RIP my friend

I was deeply saddened to learn of Phil's passing. It's a small comfort to know that he is not suffering any more. Rest is peace, dear cousin. Deepest condolences to Karen and family.

Phil's nickname at Kennedy was Sugar Bear. It fit his character perfectly. He was a super nice, gentle, easy going person. I spent many hours with Phil. I will always miss him too.

Phil was a classmate at Kennedy H.S., and I worked for his dad at the drive-in during my college years. Phil was a great guy who came from a great family.
Rest in peace Phil.

Phil was a great friend. When I was new to Cedar Rapids he treated me like we had been lifelong buddies. His favorite prank to pull on me was to offer to drive to lunch when we taught together at Kirkwood and when we would go out to his car it was his little red Mazda Miata! I’m 6’5” and about 275 lbs and he would just laugh at me getting into his car... a quiet gentle man is who I knew. A formidable fire fighter as well whose advice held a lot of weight with me. RIP my friend.. my brother! You will be remembered fondly!

I worked with Phil for many years at CRFD. Phil kept to himself most of the time but was friendly to everyone and he had a heart of gold. He repaired the breathing apparatus for the fire department for many years and everyone knew Phil had there back anytime you put on the scab. We talked a lot about stocks. He would check them every day. He was a great guy and a good friend. I’m happy I was able to be apart of his life. My deepest sympathy to the family and friends. He will be missed

Will always remember Phil. Worked with him over 10 years at Central. A treat to work with him as he was one of those men where you could work 24 hours with and still be friends. We both helped each other over the years and was sad to hear of his passing. Our deepest sympathy to his family.
