Mildred Louise (Layher) Atz, 96, of Alburnett, passed away Friday, July 07, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family. Funeral Service: 11:00 am Friday, July 14, 2017 at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. A visitation will be held from 4-7 pm Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Cedar Memorial Chapel Stateroom. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. 

Mildred was born August 11, 1920, the daughter of Clarence and Mae (Ridgeway) Layher, in Rockville, Missouri. She was married to Raymond T. Atz on February 16, 1938 in Osceola, Missouri. Mildred worked as a housekeeper and nanny for many years. In the 1950’s, she wrote the Alburnett news for the Central City News Letter and Marion Sentinel. During the 1970’s, Mildred was a vender at the Marion Farmer’s Market. She was an avid gardener and had many hobbies including; crafts, playing cards, sewing, needle work, knitting, and crocheting. Many who visited Mildred would often go home with a handmade dishcloth. 

Mildred was a member of Alburnett United Methodist Church, United Methodist Woman, Alburnett Garden Club, Alburnett Historical Society, Alburnett Senior Citizen Club, Senior Luncheon Club, Tuesday Breakfast Club, a square dance club, and in the early 1950’s, she organized the Alburnett Book Exchange Club. 

Survivors include her daughters, Jerris (Ronald) Richardson of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Jalaa Weaver of Alburnett; five grandchildren, Ret. Col James (Penny) Richardson, Jenice (David Hess) Richardson, Jon Richardson, Josh (Kristin) Conway, Holly (Augustin) Reyes; eight great-grandchildren; step-son, James of Minnesota; six step-grandchildren; sixteen step-great-grandchildren; seven step-great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her husband; sons, Donald and Dick; siblings, Lois, Lucille and Lawrence. A son-in-law; step-daughter, and two step-grandsons. 

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Mercy of Hospice for their loving care of Mildred, and her care giver and special friend, Grace Moyer.
