I first became aware of John Grant at a St. Matt's retreat, when he spoke for his table. I thought as I heard him, this is a thinking man that I would like to know. So, when I saw him at Mass from time to time I would just go up to say hello. I last saw him in the back of the church and said hello again, not knowing it would be the last time. I do wish I would have gotten to know him as I believe he would have been a wonderful conversationalist.

Barb, we are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of your wonderful Father. Your friend is right: the picture of him is how we'll always remember him! The wonderful, giving smile, and the American flag by the top button of his shirt!! I remember that he often carried around his copy of the Constitution, and I'd see him reading it at dinner. He was a true patriot. My Dad was inconsolable when he heard the news at dinner the other night. One of his caregivers told me that he always asked to be taken to your Dad's table to say hi before he left the dining room. He called my Dad the "Chief." They had a very special relationship. He wrote him letters and cards which we still have and will always cherish. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Barb, i feel I know your dad so well, not because of the one encounter I had with him but rather because of the heartfelt words and stories you shared with me about him! The picture on here-priceless, his smile-contagious, his legacy-endless. Sending thoughts and prayers to you. May you find comfort knowing that he is in his eternal life and that soon you will meet again! Hugs!

We got to know John at the children's Mass at St Matthews once a week. At the kiss of Peace he had wonderful things to say to us and was so sincere as he shook our hand. We felt so blessed in his presence. We were spoiled by his attention . Recently saw him at Mass on Sunday at St Matthews and we got so excited to see him. It was so wonderful to be with him for a moment and wish each other well. He was such a saintly man...how blessed we were to have known him with such a brief encounter but such a lasting memory...RIP John...
