Memorial

Arlon T. Nelson, 97, of Cedar Rapids, died January 15, 2012 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday, January 20, 2012 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Pastor Tye Male of New Covenant Bible Church will officiate. Visitation will begin at the chapel after 2:30 pm on Friday. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Surviving are his daughter, Carole Nelson of Omaha, NE; his siblings, Weir Nelson and wife Mary of Ely and Jean Murray and husband Robert of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren Laura Nelson of Denver, CO and Katie Dall-Winther and husband Mark of Des Moines; his great grandchildren, Andrew, Emily and Elizabeth Dall-Winther; sister-in-law CharLes Klouda of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are his good friends Kent and Nancy Cole who raised Katie and Laura following their parents death; honorary grandchildren, Jason and Jessica Cole; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eleanor; his son, Dr. Robert J. Nelson; daughter-in-law, Sue Nelson; and his brother, Irwin Nelson.

Arlon was born March 6, 1914 in Ellsworth, Iowa the son of Wier and Ella (Thompson) Nelson. Following graduation at Des Moines East High School, he went on and graduated from Cummings School of Art in Des Moines. He was united in marriage to Eleanor M. Klouda on July, 15, 1941 in Cedar Rapids; she preceded him in death in 2007. He was employed as a commercial artist for CMF&Z Advertising and at Iowa Manufacturing during WWII. Arlon and Eleanor later owned and operated Nelson’s Grocery and Meat’s for 20 years. He was a very accomplished oil and acrylic painter and in his retirement sold many of his paintings. He also gave many paintings to family and friends.

He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be greatly missed.

Memorial donations in Arlon’s honor may be made to St. Luke’s Hospital.
