Dearest Family, As a 1966 graduate of Jefferson High School I would like to thank you for the perfect picture of Mr. Noonan. I was/am only 4'11" and I can remember him "towering over me", but I loved being around and talking with him. He had such an infectious smile and personality. You all have my deepest condolences. Mr. Noonan was my biology instructor in my senior year at Jefferson(1965). Since I loved English and hated science, I waited until I couldn't avoid taking my science requiremet. I had no idea then how his enthusiasm in class would start me on a life-long interest in science that I have shared with my children and grandchildren. He enriched my life and has touched the lives of children he has never met. The world is a better place because he shared his talents with so many.

I knew Coach Noonan from track. A great guy who took what he did very seriously, but not himself. My favorite memory of RJ is in 1972 I happened to be driving in his station wagon to the Drake Relays, and some teammate in the car was talking about buying a used car. Boy, did that ever get Coach's attention!!! He lectured us the whole way to Drake about how you NEVER should buy a used car! "You buy a used car, you buy someone else's problems" he repeated over and over. Hey RJ THE BIRD LIVES!! With affection. Neil Van Slyke Class of "72

This is one of those times when you just know there will be an overwhelming amount of greetings. I didn't even have R.J. as a teacher, but he was 'a presence' because of his personality and, yes, his size. I can't believe the walls of Jeff are still standing since his retirement. During the late 70's and early 80's I spent much of my free time at the Noonan household. "Big Noons" as he was called was my Dad's HS Football coach back in the small town of Wellman, IA. So my family has had a connection to the Noonan's since the mid 50's. My Dad told me the story when Coach Noonan took a football helmet and cracked it up side my Dad's helmet because he messed up a Play several times during practice. Mr. Noonan was not a man to small talk about non significant petty issues. When he spoke you always listened because you knew his words would have substance. (And he was 6 ft-6" so I was a little nervous) This connection with the Noonan family will go on for many more years thanks to Mr. Noonan. Mike and I live 2 hours apart and see each other often and talk even more. He really is like the brother I never had. My daughter Alex loves to go down to Tucson and play with Kara (her big sis) and Jake and Joe. My Alex is an only child so the Noonan kids are like her brothers and sisters. Thanks Big Noon's for letting my family be a part of the Noonan family for all these years and many years to come!!!

Dear Noonan Family, My name is Jerry Ernst. I ran Cross Country at Jefferson High School from 1984-87. Our teams went to state in Cross Country all 3 years of high school with Coach Noonan at the realm. We finished 9th (1984) 5th (1985) and 4th (1986). Coach helped me achieve All-State and All-state elite teams my senior year. My memories were never dull with R.J. as our coach. He had a good time coaching and he enjoyed Cross Country more than Track & Field. He always called me "The Big Ern" because I was probably the shortest on the team. My dad called me tonight from Cedar Rapids - and I wanted to at least let the family know I am praying for you and you are in my prayers. My high school memories are some of the best in my life - and I was thankful and glad to have had Coach Noonan as my coach and Science teacher. I am a pastor today in Steubenville, OH. We always had prayer before our meets. In my prayers, Rev. Jerry Ernst

Dear Noonan Family, I have such fond memories of meeting your family when I started third grade at Monroe. I remember crying at recess everyday until Celeste Langhurst and Kathy came to my rescue. I was offered friendship immediately. The first time I came to your home and met the rest of the family, I felt welcome immediately. Going into the side door of the house and straight to the basement where I met a family that opened their door and lives to me. All through the school years I was in and out of your home. Even when Kathy left for college, I gained a closed relationship with Sandy so I was still in and out of your home. I had a chance to watch Mary and Mike grow up and to share meeting the extended family members. What a loving family you were to me and I will never forget Mr. Noonan standing over me in the kitchen, calling me Dawson. I smile as I think of you all with prayers and blessings to each of you. Mrs. Noonan you and your husband never thought of me being any different because of the color of my skin coming to your home. You just welcomed me. I say to you Thank you very much! I am sad to hear we have lost "our coach". RJ taught me not only how to run, but also how to compete, how to laugh at myself, and how to enjoy the day. For 3 years he chased me down the streets around Jefferson on his bike, around the cross country courses or around the track waving his arms and yelling at the top of his lungs "go-go-go Mac". What a great example he set for all of us.

Dear Noonan Family, I graduated Jefferson Sr. High in 1993, RJ was always one of my favorite teachers. Even when we had to disect frogs, eww! He would always say, "Well it can't feel any pain so just open him up and see what's inside!" We all know what was inside of Mr. Noonan and that is a BIG HEART! He cared for so many people. He always made learning fun and I know he will be greatly missed. Another fond memory I have of Mr. Noonan is no matter what class I was sitting in during the day I always knew when he was walking in the hallways because he was so tall you could see his head bobbing up and down in the top windows of the classroom. He was a great inspiration to me during my years at Jefferson and for that I will greatly miss him. The last time I seen Mr. Noonan was in 1997 I ran into him at a store. And was suprised that he still remembered me. We talked about the frogs again, and he said to me, "Even when something is gone it is still alive in many other ways." It took me along time to understand what he truly meant. And now I know! And even though Mr. Noonan is gone he is walking in heaven and his life will remain alive in so many ways to so many people. I just recently heard of Mr. Noonan's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I enjoyed watching the memorial video. Mr. Noonan was a fantastic teacher-and made science fun. Jefferson Class of 1988
