Memorial

Howard H. Beals, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, November 6, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center. Memorial Mass: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday by All Saints Catholic Church to be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church by the Rev. David O’Connor. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. with a vigil service beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Survivors include his wife, Sue; children, Dick (Jan) of Robins, Nancy Beals of Cedar Rapids, Joanne (Mike) Allen of Oshkosh, NE, Bob (Margaret) Beals of Eugene, OR, and Heidi Short of Cedar Rapids; ten grandchildren, Kelsey Beals, Lindsey (Patrick) Anderson, Kerry (Dan) Strait, Sarah (Steve) Otero, Matt and Hannah Allen, Bryan and Marcus Beals, Kaci and Samantha Short; and four great grandchildren, Madison, Austin, Avery, and Alex.

Howard was born March 11, 1921 in Cedar Rapids. Howard was an Air Force veteran of WWII. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1942. Howard married Sue Kirkland in Cedar Rapids on January 15, 1949. He worked for Welch-Cook-Beals Company and was a founder of United Realty. Howard retired from Skogman Realty in 1983.

Howard was a member of All Saints Catholic Church. He was also very active in the community, volunteering with United Way, March of Dimes and many others. Howard cherished his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America, serving since 1960. He was a recipient of the Commissioners Arrowhead Award, the Distinguished Commissioner Award, the District Award of Merit, the St. George Emblem, and the Silver Beaver Award.

In lieu of flowers, Howard requested memorials be made to the Endowment Fund for the Hawkeye Area Council Boy Scouts of America or a charity of the donor’s choice.
