Fred Gilbert
Fred was always so kind to me. I remember with fondness both Fred and Ann. Doris, Lena and Jack were lucky to have such wonderful parents. "Because I could not stop for Death He kindly stopped for me; The carriage held but just ourselves And Immortality." Eternal peace... Rebecca, Stuart and Madison Gordon

The Tang family extends our heartfelt sympathy to all members of the Gilbert family. My father, Donald C. Tang, had the privilege of meeting both Fred and Ann Gilbert several years before his own death; and they collectively embraced remembering an unspeakable horror. My father was one of the American soldiers that liberated the concentration camp at Dachau in April 1945. I know it remainded the proudest moment of his life and his greatest legacy! May God bless your parents and hold them in the palm of his almighty hand.

My mother and father (Harold Mahnke and Maxine Anderson Mahnke) worked at E. Cohn & Sons with Fred, in fact that is where my parents met. He was such a good friend to my parents, even long after my father quit working at Cohns. Tonight at dinner we were sharing memories of Fred and remember he always had a smile on his face. Our whole family always thought so highly of Fred and have wonderful memories of him. I knew some of his history, but his obituary was so facinating to read. We were blessed to have shared even a small portion of his life.

Lena, Doris and Jack - So sorry to hear of Fred's death. You have all had a lot to deal with this past year. Fred and Ann were good people and we will never forget them. I had so much respect for them. Sharing the Halocaust memories started out as a painful reminder of their past history. But, after a few times, it became a healing experience. Every time I hear that word - Halocaust - I think of Ann and Fred. You can all be so proud of them - they both were amazing people. It was a privilege knowing them.

I felt very sad to learn of Fred's passing. My parents, Bill & Mary Hennessey, were good friends of Ann & Fred and always spoke with such respect for them. I remember the first time I met Fred. I was maybe 10 and he was so funny. He made everyone laugh. He also showed us the number tatooed on his arm from the concentration camps. My parents explained to me afterwards about what had happened to Fred and his family at the hands of the Nazis and how he met Ann after the war. The obituary was amazing. He did so much good in his life. I am sorry for your loss.

Fred and Anna were my favorite couple at Hallmar. They both had such great personalities. When I dropped off kolaches at Hallmar this past June, Fred really enjoyed them. Yup, he had a little 'bohemie' in him. I.ll miss them both!

Hello Lena and family, I recall interviewing your father for KGAN-TV more than 25 years ago. He was very nice and so gracious. He and your mom lead a remarkable life and certainly few people could comprehend the struggles and challenges they endured during the war. May many warm and thoughful memories lift your spirits during this difficult time. Take care. Sincerely, Wade Wagner

I didn't know Mr. Gebotszrajber, but read his obituary in the Gazette while I was in Iowa City this past weekend and it brought tears to my eyes. I visited Dachau concentration camp as a student 40 years ago and vowed at that time to "never forget" the Holocaust. Humanity must never allow this to happen again. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. A donation has been made to the Simon Wiesenthal Center in his memory. "Never again. Nie wieder." Shalom! From a fellow "Iowan".

Mr. Gilbert was the first resident I met at Villages where my mother resided. He was always very nice and friendly. He often sat in the lobby area near the fireplace.

Dear Doris, I was sorry to read about the death of your father in the CR Gazette. I was in CR helping to care for my father at the same time the service was for your father. Once, when we were children, we were friends and I have fond memories of our times together. I hope you will remember me and hope you will write me an email. I live relatively close. My sincerely condolences, Linda
