Memorial

John L. “Jack” Hoffman, 84, a resident of Mercy Hallmar, died Saturday, October 16, 2009. Services with military honors will be held at 11 AM Wednesday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Father Karl Glovik will officiate. Entombment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include a daughter Nancy (Bill) Oddo of Atkins, Iowa, son Mark Hoffman of Christchurch, New Zealand, grandson Christopher (Anna) Oddo of Palo, Great granddaughter Sydni Maria Oddo, a sister Jean Perell of Oregon, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Winifred.

John was born February 23, 1925 in Dubuque, Iowa, to John and Louise Oberhofer Hoffman. He married Winifred Wagner on February 4, 1950 in Cedar Rapids. She died December 23, 2007. He was an accountant and in computer operation for Iowa Electric for 30 years retiring in 1982. He served in the US Navy during WW II and was on the third ship, the USS Yarnall, entering Tokyo Bay prior to the surrender of Japan. He volunteered at Mercy Medical Center. He loved to dance for several organizations. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and fishing. In high school he participated in track and field and excelled as a pole vaulter.

Military honors provided by VFW Post No 788.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
