George William Thiher, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, October 9, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Private Graveside Services: Big Grove Cemetery, Vinton. A visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel.

George is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons, Steve (Barbara) Thiher of Cedar Rapids, Bruce Thiher and Mark (Terri) Thiher, both of Minneapolis, MN, and James (Donna) Thiher of LaCrosse, WI; stepsons, Michael Herman of Minneapolis, MN and James Herman of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Steven, Michael, Sara, David, Richard, Tom, Nicki, Rachel, Michelle, Andrew, Hannah, and Nathan; and great grandchildren, Anna and Mayla. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dolores; four brothers, Lynn, Ottah, Albert and David; and grandson, Jacob.

George was born January 6, 1925 in Vinton to Albert and Emma Thiher. He married Dolores Baumgartner in 1946 in Vinton. She died in 1981. He married Dorothy Herman in 1985 in Cedar Rapids. He was employed by Sieg until his retirement in 1985. He was a Charter member of the Golden K Kiwanis and a member of the VFW #788. George was an avid fisherman and loved to play cards. His family was very proud of his and Dorothy’s contributions for the Mercy Women’s Center and other community projects.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be made to the Linn County Food Bank or Hospice House of Mercy.
