William W. "Bill" Welty Jr., 77, of Davenport died Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at his home after courageously fighting lung cancer and emphysema. He was surrounded by his loved ones at his passage into heaven's gates.
Services will be held at 1 PM Saturday in Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be from 11 AM to service time.
Pastor Tony Liston of the Adventure Christian Community Church in Davenport will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Mr. Welty was born February 5, 1932, at Cedar Rapids, the son of William W. Welty and Lulu Marie (Engelman) Welty. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, Cedar Rapids, in 1955. Bill married Deloris A Freeman and to this union were born three children, Janice Marie, Robert William who died as an infant, and James Robert. They later divorced.

Bill married Patricia Cole-Unruh in 1966, who brought into their marriage three lovely daughters, Lori, Robin, and Lisa. To this union was born a son, Michael Karl. December 2nd would have been their 43rd wedding anniversary.

Bill joined the Cedar Rapids Police Department in 1960, beginning a career in law enforcement, to protect and serve communities that would span 23 years. From 1973 to 1976 Bill was Assistant Chief of Police in Carlisle, Ia. From 1976 to 1978 Bill served as Police Chief in Bondurant, Iowa. From 1978 to 1982 he served as Chief of Police in Eldridge, Iowa. While in Eldridge, Bill formed the first Law Enforcement Explorers group geared toward High School aged students interested in law enforcement as a career.

Bill is a past member of the Iowa State Policemen's Association; Iowa Chief of Police Association; and the Quad Cities Chief's Association. He was an active member of Adventure Christian Community Church.

Over the years, Bill enjoyed ice skating, roller skating, track, playing the violin, collecting police patches and riding his Yamaha motorcycle where he and Pat rode with the CMA while living in Albuquerque, NM. He loved the fishing trips to MN with family. He later became a collector of fountain pens sold by his entrepreneur grandfather, William A. Welty of the William A. Welty & Co. manufactures of fountain pens & pencils.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Patricia; children, Janice (John) Schick of Cedar Rapids; James (Allison) Welty of Des Moines; Lori Pelletier of Davenport; Robin (Michael) Lowry of Fishers, IN; Lisa (Greg) Ashby of Eldridge; and Michael (Donna) Welty of Davenport, seventeen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death; by his parents and infant son, Robert.

Bills family expresses heartfelt appreciation for all the loving care provided by Heartland Hospice and especially to his hospice nurse Velvet Eisenhauer.
