Memorial

Marie L. Brown, 99 years and 349 days, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center from a short illness. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Wednesday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Beth Straw of St. James United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include her daughter Joyce Mathews Claude and her best friend Dick Frondle of Cedar Rapids, and a son Jack Brown and wife Jill (Penny) of St. Joseph, Missouri, three sisters Genevieve (Kendel) Thompson of Ottumwa, Iowa, Violet (Leon) Nichols of Grove, Oklahoma, and Dorothy Adkins of Derby, Kansas, a brother Lloyd Grimes of Ft. Worth, Texas, grandchildren Beverly (Dave) Myers of Atkins, Cathy Ham of Fairfax, Robert (Michelle) Mathews of Riverside, California, and Brenda (Patrick) Quandt of Coggon, Michelle (Bret) Mason of Olathe, Kansas, Shona (Kraig) Kirkwood of Turney, Missouri, Laura Lake of North Kansas City, Missouri, and Brian (Jennifer) Brown of St. Joseph, Missouri, and 15 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother Ralph, two sisters Alma Juanita and Mildred Cartwricht, her husband of 64 years Kenneth, and her great granddaughter Misty Hayes.

Marie was born September 22, 1909 in Clio, Iowa to Carl and Flora (Wallace) Grimes. She married Kenneth Brown on January 28, 1933 in Papillion, Nebraska. Marie worked for Wingstern Hasley, Turner Microphone, American News, and Singer Sewing. She took care of children when the grandchildren came along, and baby sat from 1954 till 2001 when she turned 92. She loved to sew and make beautiful albums and crafts. She loved people and no one was a stranger when she got done talking to them.

Marie will be greatly missed by her family and friends and those who just met her for a moment. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
