Dewain L. Sparrgrove, 91, formerly of Keystone Cedars, died at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Tuesday, May 19, 2009. Memorial Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Dr. Dale Holloway of Living Hope Wesleyan Church. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.


Dewain is survived by children, Dewain (Kathy) Sparrgrove of Des Moines, Cinda (Bill) Tanner of Iowa City, Bill (Chris) Sparrgrove of Ft. Myers, Fl, Phil Sparrgrove of Cedar Rapids, Eric (Kathy) Sparrgrove of Mission, TX, Kristi (Greg) Mumford of Marion, Debbie (Bob) Lumpa of Saudi Arabia, Karen (Jeff) Hanover of Waterloo; stepchildren, Mary (Richard) Milbauer of Apache Junction, AZ, Barbara (Tom) Donofrio of Stevensville, MT, and Donald (Terri) Enck of Poway, CA; sister, Lorene (Dallas) Stratton of Ocala, FL; 18 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and several step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two wives, a sister, Gladys, and a granddaughter, Jennifer.

Dewey was born May 10, 1918 in Marengo to William and Cinderilla Hawkins Sparrgrove. He owned Dewey’s Jack & Jill Store, in West Branch and Traer. He was in the grocery business for over 38 years, retiring in 1983. He married Marjorie Louise Anthony in 1940. She died in 1993. He married Donna Joan Enck in 1994. She died in 2002.

Dewey was a member of the Presbyterian church and United Commercial Travelers. He loved wintering in Arizona and playing horseshoes, bicycling, and card playing. He spent a lot of time reading and listening to taped westerns.

Memorials may be directed to the Hospice House of Mercy.
