Robert Gates Monroe

Just a month or so ago I talked with Cindy about my father, Leigh Greene and Mr. Monroe being friends when we lived in Charles City. My father enjoyed all kinds of sports and would often spend time in the sporting good store just visiting. I was privileged to see Mr. Monroe about 5 years ago when he visited our church as he new our minister Dr. Springston. He was a great citizen of Charles City and that town has many things to thank him for. My sympathy to you all and as time passes may all your memories be good ones. Margaret Greene

It was my privledge to live on the same street at Crystal Estates with Bob and Ruth and then Karen. Please accept my sincere sympathy for your loss. He was truly a gentle man. We shared many good times. I am sure my late husband Don will greet him in heaven. He surely will have a special spot; for a JOB WELL DONE. Fondly;

So sorry to hear of Bob's passing. I wonder if he knew what an influence he had on so many lives back there in Charles City. As a youngster growing up in the '50s, I'd listen to his radio show every morning to get the previous day's baseball scores and when they started the Little League baseball program, he was my first coach. I wasn't very big back then and, as I recall, I wasn't very good either. But thanks to the encouragement I got from Bob (and my parents, of course), I survived that first season and many, many more. I'm still playing baseball and I've coached summer teams off and on for the past 25 years or so. With every team I coach, I can't help but think back to the times I played for Bob, hoping I can in some way give my players the same kind of encouragement and the foundation to appreciate the game for years to come. I know Bob will be missed by his family and friends but you should know that a little bit of him lives on in all of us who knew him and are doing what we can to pass along the things he stood for. He was a good man. Curt Sylvester
