Joan C. Carpenter, 87, of 2115 1st Ave. SE died there on Monday May 4, 2009. A memorial celebration will be at 11:00 AM on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Inurnment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, John, a son, John L. of Alisa Viejo, California; two daughters, Susan (Hal) Hellentall of Cedar Rapids and Anita Lambert of Amana; a sister, Mary Edgerton of Richmond, Virginia and two brothers, Jack Gearing of LaBlanc, Michigan and William (Mimi) Gearing of Highland Park, Illinois. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Jeanne Sheehan of Trout Lake, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Joan was born on October 3, 1921 in St. Clair, Michigan, the daughter of Milton and Inez Jones Gearing. She received her masters degree in education from the University of Michigan. She married John R. Carpenter on Aug. 19, 1949 in St. Clair, Michigan. Joan was a homemaker, enjoyed tennis, and started playing racquetball at the age of 82. She was a devoted and life long member of the First Church of Christ Scientist.

Joan was a wonderful person; loving, caring, compassionate and an example for everyone to follow. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and loving family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the charity of the donor’s choice. The family would like to thank the staff at Cottage Grove Health Center and Amenity Hospice for the wonderful care given to Joan. There will be a gathering and lunch at Cottage Grove Place from Noon until 2:00 PM on Friday.
